Thunder’s Story

In the spring of 2012, a promising auction caught my husband’s attention. It is filled with miniature mares, many with foals at their sides and bred back to respected stallions. Among them was a heavily pregnant mare. I think she didn’t get many bids because her colt was not in the photos.

I won the auction and arranged to pick them up myself, but a trusted acquaintance who had also purchased horses offered to transport them for a fee comparable to my own travel costs. It seemed like a practical solution, a few days before pickup, when the farm called with troubling news. Thunder had something wrong with one of his eyes. It appeared grey and dented. I asked them to apply regular Neosporin until a vet could see him. During the transport, the driver stopped at a well-known Kentucky veterinary clinic for another horse, and they examined him while she was there.

The diagnosis was devastating: one eye had an ulcer and abscess, the other was severely ulcerated. The vet recommended removing both eyes immediately. Thunder was only 17 days old. I explained that my veterinary team was at Tennessee Equine Hospital. The Kentucky vet agreed to let you try treatment, primarily concerned that Thunder might not have access to proper care. I assured them he would.

Once home, Thunder was seen by two of the lead vets at Tennessee Equine. They added to the initial treatment plan, and what followed was a four-month marathon of care. It took a village. My husband treated Thunder’s eyes before heading to work, and my neighbor stepped in for the morning shift. I treated him from mid-morning until 2 a.m. every single day.

Through relentless dedication and expert guidance, both of Thunder’s eyes were saved. Today, Thunder stands as a living testament: that every life is worth fighting for, and that healing is possible when compassion leads the way.

Show Results

DaNel showed DDMinis KSB Peppys Powerful Thunder and qualified him for the AMHA World Show in 2015 and the AMHR Nationals in 2018.

Thunder was on the show circuit and shown by Laura Tennill in the summer of 2019. He placed 6th in the 28″ to 30″ stallions at AMHA Worlds and 4th at AMHR Nationals.  He currently has three foals on the ground.

In 2015, I attended the AMHA World Show for the first time. Although he placed last, that experience became a turning point; I gained invaluable insight that shaped how I prepare and present horses in the ring today.
